Sugestões de filmes #6

Street Angel (1928, Frank Borzage)

In Naples, Angela is sentenced to a year in the workhouse when she tries to steal(while streetwalking) to pay for medicine for her dying mother. She escapes and is hidden by a circus, where she's a natural talent and meets Gino, a painter. When she breaks her ankle in a fall, her career ends. Gino wants to go to Naples, but the law may still be looking for her, but he doesn't know about her past. The story of a starving artist and a beauty with a secret.
This movie is a pure and stuning melodrama, it has a brilliant game of light and shadows. "Borzage is a poet  of lovers that tries to live in an unfair world." An exquisite movie.

"Love is like the measles. When it comes you cannot stop it."

La piel que habito (2011, Pedro Almodóvar)

                                                 ★

In honor of his late wife who died in a flaming car accident, scientist, Dr. Robert Ledgard, is trying to synthesize the perfect skin which can withstand burns, cuts or any other kind of damage. As he gets closer to perfecting this skin on his flawless patient, the scientific community starts growing skeptical and his past is revealed that shows how his patient is closely linked to tragic events he would like to forget.
This film shows how powerful Almodóvar can be. It surprises his audience with an amazing storyline while discomforting them, it gave me goosebumps. Surreal, genius, amazing, mind blowing. Almodóvar is brilliant, once again.

 "I breathe. I breathe. I breathe. I know I breathe."

The Illusionist (2010, Sylvain Chomet )

                                                  ★

Details the story of a dying breed of stage entertainer whose thunder is being stolen by emerging rock stars. Forced to accept increasingly obscure assignments in fringe theaters, garden parties and bars, he meets a young fan who changes his life forever.
This is so mush more than an entertaining film, my eyes got a bit watery. I was totally caught off guard by how heartbreaking this was. It has beautiful hand-drawings and a wonderful sentimental story. An image worth more than a thousand words.
